What Makes Cincinnati Works work? We offer a holistic approach to eliminating poverty in the Cincinnati Tri-State area through a network of services and partnerships designed to help our Members overcome the barriers to stable, long-term employment.
As a privately-funded, non-profit organization, we are able to serve any willing and capable job seekers who are eligible for our program. Because we receive no federal funding, we are also able to serve those who would otherwise be ineligible for other programs e.g. men, women without dependent children and women without children.
Who We Serve Cincinnati Works serves two segments of the population: those who are currently unemployed, and those who are underemployed e.g. the working poor. The short-term goal for the unemployed is to help them stabilize in a job that pays $7.00 –- $10.00 per hour with health benefits.
The long-term goal for the underemployed is for them to earn 200% of the federal poverty rate and move to economic self-sufficiency. Economically self-sufficient people become taxpayers and productive citizens who no longer require public assistance.
Our clients become Members of the Cincinnati Works program and receive lifetime membership for as long as they are employed or actively seeking work.
Results Through a carefully constructed program model based on research and analysis as well as a network of over 50 core employers participating in our program, our Members have achieved an unprecedented 84% retention rate. With over 600 employments annually, our results have gained the attention of other communities seeking to eliminate poverty in their regions. We have already replicated our program in whole in Houston, Texas and in part in Covington, Kentucky.
Our work has been recognized by the following organizations:
Dr. Ruby Payne, author, educator, trainer, and national expert on understanding poverty, stated in May 2008:
"The visit to Cincinnati Works was memorable and exemplary. Every city should be so fortunate to have a 'Cincinnati Works.' Much of poverty is linked to being under resourced --- particularly as it relates to the intergenerational transfer of knowledge. Cincinnati Works provides that knowledge base to individuals. It is absolutely outstanding and serves as a model program."
